I am restoring a 1981 GTI (#16913) and know very little about VW motors. How can I decipher the engine code for a 1600 motor? My understanding is that the alternator tower has the code on it and mine has 040.101.211.1 but in the literature that I found, it mentions some letters which I have been unable to find.

In looking at the rest of the crankcase, I identified another number that would appear to be the engine number. It is SPBA257848. Can anyone decipher this for me?
