VIN Information
Body, Chassis & Engine identification numbers can be somewhat confusing for those that have not had exposure to them
before since they do not follow the same protocol as other typical U.S. cars. Here is what to look for when trying to
identify all of the numbers associated with your Puma.
- The fiberglass body is identified by a four or five digit number that can be found on the boot, bonnet & somewhere on the
main body itself. I have yet to run across my body identification plate, but I am pretty sure it is there somewhere!
- The chassis has a 9 digit alpha-numeric code which can be found on the passenger side pan (behind the seat), on
the frame tunnel just in front of the shifter coupling access hole and finally on the VIN plate within the trunk area.
For example, mine is SP1023235.
- One item to note, some states (for example California) will assign a unique VIN when the car is registered so
that the number meets US protocol. Each state may vary where they locate this alternate and unique VIN, but it will be
placed on both the body and the chassis.
- The engine identification number can be found on the block just below the alternator stand. It follows the standard
VW coding and is not specific to the Puma.

Here is a short write up that PurringPumas.com did regarding a question
that a Puma owner had about deciphering his car's VIN:
"The car's data plate from Brazil typically does not carry a VIN number but rather the serial number.
Typically this data plate is mounted above the gas tank on the rear right of the front trunk.
Typically, Pumas were assigned VIN numbers by individual states when they were imported into the United States
(ours was assigned by Arizona). It is somewhat difficult to identify the exact year of Pumas as there were very few
body changes except for the big changes in the early eighties from the GTS to GTC and GTE to GTI. If your car has rubber
bumpers, it is definitely a Puma post 1981.
Sorry we could not be of more help but this is a department that changes from car to car and with Pumas it can be somewhat
difficult to find an exact answer!"
